Plot

The film is set in a dystopian future where most of humanity has been wiped out by a zombie plague. The remaining survivors live in a walled city led by Colonel Grigio, Julie's father. R is a zombie who lives in an abandoned airport with other zombies. He is different from most zombies as he can think and feel emotions, but he cannot remember his name or anything about his past life. He spends his days wandering around and collecting items that he finds interesting.

One day, he and a group of zombies attack a group of humans who are scavenging for supplies. R kills Perry, Julie's boyfriend, and eats his brain, which gives him Perry's memories and feelings for Julie. R becomes attracted to Julie and saves her from the other zombies. He takes her to his airplane home and plays music for her. Julie is initially terrified, but she gradually warms up to R and realizes that he is different from other zombies.

R and Julie begin to bond over their mutual love of music and books. R also starts to regain his humanity as his heart begins to beat and his skin becomes warmer. He also learns to speak more words and express his emotions. Julie decides to leave the airport and return to the city, but R insists on going with her. They encounter a group of zombies who have also started to become more human-like due to R's influence. They call themselves the "Boneys", and they are the ones who started the zombie plague. They are hostile to both humans and zombies who are changing.

R and Julie manage to escape from the Boneys and reach the city wall. However, they are captured by the soldiers and taken to Colonel Grigio. Julie tries to convince her father that R is different and that the zombies can change back to humans, but he refuses to listen and orders R to be killed. Julie helps R escape and they run away together. They are pursued by both the soldiers and the Boneys.

R and Julie reach a baseball stadium where they find a group of zombies who have also become more human-like. They join forces with them and fight against the Boneys. During the battle, R is shot by Grigio, but he does not die as he has fully regained his humanity. Julie kisses him and he wakes up. Grigio sees this and realizes that Julie was right about the zombies. He orders his men to stop fighting and help the zombies.

The film ends with R and Julie watching the sunrise together. They narrate that the zombie plague is over and that humanity is rebuilding itself. They also say that they do not know what their future holds, but they are hopeful.
